Renà © Descartes Renà © Descartes was a French philosopher and also mathematician. His method of doubt led him to the famous cogito ergo sum when translated means I am thinking, therefore I exist. This cogito was the foundation for Descartes quest for certain knowledge. He explored doubt and how we can prove our own existence, by taking the first steps of scepticism. His book Meditations On First Philosophy, was written in six parts. Each representing the six days that God took to create the world. Not to upset the Church, Descartes would need to prove the existence of God, and the soul. Within Descartes argument, we find some important areas. Two, which require focus, are his†¦show more content†¦He came to the conclusion, that to doubt is to think; and to think is to exist. An example in Russells Western philosophical thought is that anything, which doubts, understands, affirms, conceives, wills, denies, imagines and feels is something, which is thinking. And feeling, when it occurs in dr eams, is thought. So therefore anything which thinks, also too exists. In Descartes wax example, he takes a piece of wax from the honeycomb in its solid form. He observes that there are certain things, which are apparent towards the senses. The taste of the honey, its temperature (cold), the size, the colour, and when you tap it, it makes a sound. Yet, if we place the wax near heat, or a fire, the features and qualities change. No longer is the shape the same. It has become hot, and when you tap it there is no sound. This is the wax in its liquid form. So is the wax we see now, the same wax we saw before these changes? Before these changes were apparent, Descartes pointed out the difficulties of relying on the senses, of the physical body. In section 31 of Meditation two, he says that the perception he has, is a case not of vision or touch or imagination - nor has it ever been, despite previous appearances - but of purely mental scrutiny. Leadership Qualities And Qualities Of Leadership Example For Students

Leadership Qualities And Qualities Of Leadership Leaders are those who have the ability to mobilize others to work together towards a common goal. Some people have natural leadership qualities but leadership skills can be developed through training and development. I disagree with the idea that leaders are born, they are rather built through experience and intentional improvement. In becoming a leader, I have discovered that my past experiences were preparing me to become who I am today. What I found interesting about leadership is that after I understood it, I felt responsible to grow and also to train others to grow. I will discuss 3 aspects of leadership in my paper; leadership as a responsibility, leadership as servanthood, and leadership as training. Leadership as Responsibility A few weeks ago, after a long day at work, I came home to a quiet house which was unusual for the type of family I have. I realized that my wife was working out at the gym, my youngest son was at my grandparents house and my daughter was in her bedroom sleeping. As I stepped inside my daughters room, I immediately became frustrated because of the condition the room was in. Their were cloths all over the floor, shoes scattered throughout the room, old cups of juice on her counter and to make things worse she was sleeping comfortably in her bed at 6:30 in the evening. After scanning over this horror seen called a room, I angrily woke my daughter up and demanded that she get out of her bed and immediately clean her room! Now we are both mad, Im mad because of her room, she is mad because I woke her up out of some good sleep, and here we are both upset in the middle of what looked like a war zone. As she yawns and sits up on her bed, my daughter lightly asks me the question; is your room clean? I initially wanted to explode on the inside. My heart rate excelled, my breathing increased and just at the hight of my anger, conviction hit me like a ton of bricks. My anger turned into shame as I realized that I demanded my daughter to do what I was not doing myself, and what made it worse was that she recognized it before I did. My daughter helped me realize the responsibilities of leadership. My job as a leader is to set an example for those who follow me. It does not mean less work, but it means working with purpose. My job is not to send people to do a task, it is to lead people to the task. In the early 2000’s we saw corrupt and greedy executives who cheated their workers out of wages as big businesses collapses because of mismanagement. These leaders only cared for themselves as their businesses went down and their salaries went up. Leaders that glorify God set examples that encourage others to follow in their steps. It is hypocritical to demand what I am not willing to do myself. When Solomon was asked by God what he wanted, he requested wisdom to lead Gods people. Solomon’s focus was not on himself but on the large kingdom he inherited from his father David. It was not until later in his years when his focus was on his personal gratification that he made selfish decisions that weakened h is relationship with God and the nation as a whole. I can guarantee that if the church adopts the worlds idea of leadership we will fail every time. Without studying Biblical leadership one could simply do exactly the opposite of what the world does and experience high levels of success. The world says leaders should be served, God says leaders should serve others, the world says the more others give to me the more I will be blessed, God says its more blessed to give than to receive. I had to lean upon my position as a father above my influence as a leader. Leadership as Servanthood I mentioned briefly about leading opposite of the world will guarantee the results that God requires. Servant leadership is the greatest example of leading Gods way verses leading the worlds way. Servant leadership is about being loyal to the people. Tony Dungy refers to it as â€Å"mentor leadership, he say’s â€Å"loyalty developed depth in relationship, which then forges the bonds to hold relationship firm and fast when storms and challenges come.† Servant leaders are not only concerned with meeting goals but they are concerned about the people that help them reach them. Success is not about a destination, its about seeing people grow in their relationship with Christ and as leaders. Most organization models will have the executives at the top, then upper management, followed by lower management and lastly the workers. Gods leader has a very different model. It is actually a reversed image with the leader at the bottom followed by management and workers at the top. The idea is to reproduce people who would themselves become servant leaders. The Star Wars movie gives us the perfect example of servant leadership. Every Jedi master always had an apprentice. What was unique about this relationship was the Jedi masters dedication to make the apprentice reach his or her full potential. They ate together, traveled together, fought together and learned together as they explored the possibilities of the force. Similar to Jesus with His disciples, the Jedi master did life with his apprentice. The master did not only teach lessons about the power they possessed, he modeled life before his apprentice to ensure he would maximize his potential. In this way his leadership was servanthood that ensured the continuation of the Jedi order. Leadership is Training There are many forms of training that can help leaders grow in their respected roles. Placing individuals in positions is only the first step, they should have continual training to help them learn and improve as leaders. George Barna states, â€Å"The underlying desire, regardless of the approach, is to motivate church leaders to stay fresh and current in thinking about leadership.† There is the illusion that what worked in the past will work now, and what works now will work in the future. The church has equated method with the gospel. The gospel will never change, it is Gods eternal truth that cannot be altered or watered down to appease generations to come, but methods are not the gospel. They can be changed, rearranged and changed again to make sure we get maximum results in leadership. Before pastoring, my home church was great at teaching us how to serve and love God. I learned the importance of faithfulness and sacrifice. It caused tremendous growth in my life and helped develop me in ministry. What the church failed at was to adequately train us as leaders. We were frequently placed in positions without training or communication about the vision of the ministry. Most of the time these positions became open because someone abruptly left them and the church needed to fill a vacancy. Mike Myatt wrote an interesting article on his thoughts about leadership training entitled, The #1 reason Leadership Development Fails. He states in the article, â€Å"The solution to the leadership training problem is to scrap it in favor of development. Konsep pembelajaran sepanjang hayat (PSH) ataupun lifelong learning bukanlh merupakan satu perkara yang asing lagi dalam sistem pendidikan negara ekoran daripada perubahan persekitaran baru di mana sekotor ekonomi pada sekarang berasaskan pengetahuan atau K-ekonomi menjadi keutamaan. Justeru itu, institut pendidikan guru hendaklah menerapkan nilai pembelajaran sepanjang hayat dan kemahiran untuk berfikir pada aras tinggi (KBAT). Budaya ilmu ini sangat penting, oleh itu, pengamalan budaya membaca dalam kalangan guru pelatih telah lama dipraktikkan oleh warga IPG malah ia sudah menjadi sebahagian intipati budaya oleh IPG. Di samping itu pelajar-pelajar di IPG bukan sahaja diterapkan dengan nilai pembelajaran sepanjang hayat sahaja, malah guru-guru pelatih di IPG juga telah dilatih untuk meningkatkan teknik pengajaran dalam bilik darjah. Keberkesanan aktiviti pengajaran dan pembelajaran dalam bilik darjah juga akan memberikan impak maksima kepada pelajar keraana persekitaran pembelajara n yang kondusif akan memudahkan para pelajar untuk lebih cekap dalam menimba ilmu. Oleh itu, bakal guru yang menuntut di IPG juga diajar dengan pelbagai jenis dan kemahiran mengajar untuk menarik minat pelajar semasa proses pembelajaran dan pengajaran di dalam kelas. Contohnya, penggunaan alat bantu pengajaran telah memudahkan lagi kerja guru dalam menyampaikan pengajarannya dan kaedah melakukan kerja dalam kumpulan juga telah mewujudkan suasana yang seronok untuk belajar dalam kalangan pelajar. Dengan ini guru bukan sahaja melahirkan insan yang berilmu tinggi malah mengamalkan budaya pembelajaran sepanjang hayat agar modal insan yang dihasilkan kelak akan dapat memacu kegemilangan negara sehingga ke peringkat global. Clarion Boys Case Essay

One problem in the Clarion School for Boys case is that employees did not have enough training on the system. On the survey taken, most employees responded that they were dissatisfied with the training they had received and most had training of only 1-3 hours. Since there was little training given on the system, the users were uncomfortable using it. It seemed that if they could not figure something out, they would give up and go back to doing it the old way. The bookkeeper commented, â€Å"I have been trying to finish this month’s books for the last two days, but I am having the same problems as last month. The accounts receivable software program is still giving me difficulties. I think I’ll just do them by hand this month.† When the system was first installed, the staff was excited about it but as time passed and there was no learning progression of the system, people became bored with it and stopped using it as much. Another comment made by the education supervisor was, â€Å"There was a lot of initial excitement about e-mail, but I haven’t heard much about it since then. I know I’ve been too busy to lean it myself, and I missed the training sessions because of other meetings.† I personally worked with a company where a new system was implemented and because of the lack of training and tutorials, there were major problems. For months the system was incorrect, causing many hours of overtime as well as many mess ups that had to be corrected. Familiar to this case, there was not a plan of action nor any goals set or a timeline for certain projects to be mastered. There was a lack of training causing the staff to have little confidence in their abilities to work the system. This problem falls under strategic planning. One component of strategic planning is training. Under strategic planning, the employees should be encouraged to be active in the system. They should be encouraged through training programs and help sessions. The team should establish goals and time lines of what they want to have accomplished by a specific date. In this case, there was not a formal plan or measures set. They were not able to judge how they were doing because they did not make a strategic plan to begin. I think this is a minor problem. I think the major problem is that once the system was implemented, there was no enforcement created. It seemed that the users did not want to get out of their comfort zone and learn something new. There was not much communication at the beginning and everyone seemed to be doing their own thing.

Case Study Questions 1. Who are the main players (name and position)? The main Player in this is Amy Scherber and she is the manager and owner. Another main character is Toy Kim Dupree and he is Amy’s assistant manager. 2. In what business or businesses and industry or industries is the company operating? Amy’s bread is in the business of selling bread products both wholesale and retail. They sell primarily to high quality restaurants, hotels and food shops. 3. What are the issues and problems facing the company? (Sort them by importance and urgency.) It is hard to make a large profit because Amy pays her employees a higher amount then the other business in her field. She also has to employee about four times as many employees to complete the same job due to the intensiveness provided on each batch of bread. The company is also struggling with the idea of wither to expand or stand pat with their business. 4. What is the primary problem for the company/organization in this case? The primary problem in this case is the idea of expansion. The problem is that they do not know if they should expand or stand pat. If they do expand how are they going to centralize their business. Are they going to do strictly wholesale or wholesale and retail. 5. Why have the problem (s) you cite emerged? Identify the causal chain (the events or circumstances that caused the problem-Some will be Internal Weaknesses, others EXTERNAL Threats). This main problem has occurred because they are currently located in a storefront that is not adequate to provide the needs of all their potential customers. The main weakness here is that they are in a bad location for advancement. In their current location they are completing all of the orders that they possibly can. 6. What are the characteristics of the industry that the company is in and how is the industry changing over time? When Amy’s Bread first open bread baking was a growth industry. The U.S Department of Commerce reported there was a 12 percent increase in the consumption of specialty breads per capita. This industry is also very tough to get into there are a great deal of company’s that already have been working with restaurants for a long time. The other problem with the industry is that because it was a growth period many new bakers were trying to enter it and earn a name for them. So the computation for customers is high in the industry and only growing more competitive. 7. What is the firm’s strategy for differentiation, enabling them to compete within the context of their industry? Amy had a clear goal she wanted to be famous for making a great product and for creating a good place to work. Amy’s product itself was different because she set the highest standards on her quality. They also do not use any machines in the shaping of their bread. Every load of bread was hand crafted and shaped which was why her payroll was so high but it set her breads apart from the average shop. 8. What are possible solutions to the problems you have identified? Possible solutions to her crisis on where to go or wither to move at all are one she could not move and be satisfied where she is. The second option is she could move to a building that she would be able to produce large amounts of wholesale goods at and not concentrate on retail goods. The third option is she could move to an even bigger place where she could sell retail product and still meet her needs for wholesale. 9. What are the advantages and possible disadvantages of your solution(s)? If she stays pat then she will be able to turn a marginal profit and meet the needs of her current customers. The disadvantages would be that she would then miss out on opportunity to sell to all the customers that she has on her waiting list and her retail business would not be any bigger. In second option they would be able to meet all her wholesale needs. The disadvantages would be that she could not sell retail customers any more and she would be paying more for the property. In the third option she would be able to sell both retail and wholesale. She would be in a newly developing retail market with access to foot traffic. She would also be able to meet all her whole sale needs. To top it off she would be able to design the layout of the building to fit her exact needs. The disadvantages of this are that it is very expensive. She would get everything that she is looking for but at a substantially higher price then the other two options. 10. Are there any possible problems with your suggested recommendations? What contingencies need to be accommodated? My recommendation would be to choose the third option. It is the most expensive but Amy has already demonstrated that she has a sharp business minded and is able to build business and promote it. The retail space will help spread the word of how good her bread actually is and word of mouth is the best advertisement they could have. The biggest problem that they could have is if they start to loose customers. A second problem would be if the market begins to shift away from the cravings of bread. Or another problem could be that they simply do not add enough customers to be able to afford the new space.
